Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris excoriated her Republican rival Donald Trump on Wednesday, calling him “unstable” and a threat to US democracy during a fiery interview with Fox News.
In a rare appearance on the conservative network, Harris clashed with Fox News anchor Bret Baier in a tense back-and-forth that saw them repeatedly talking over one another.
Harris used the opportunity to question Trump’s recent rhetoric, particularly his comments about the “enemy within” and potential use of military force against political opponents. She suggested these statements reflect Trump’s unfitness for a second term.
“You and I both know that he has talked about turning the American military on the American people. He has talked about going after people who are engaged in peaceful protest. He has talked about locking people up because they disagree with him,” Harris said.
In a pointed attack, she said the President of the United States should be able to “handle criticism without saying he’d lock people up for doing it.”
Throughout the interview, Harris doubled down on her criticism of the former President, calling him “unfit and dangerous”, and cited assessments from Trump’s former advisers who have expressed concerns about his mental stability.
“The former chief of staff, former defence secretaries, and former national security adviser, and his vice president warned that he is unfit to serve, that he is unstable, that he is dangerous,” Harris said, adding that Americans are “exhausted” by his penchant for demeaning critics and airing personal grievances.
Despite the interruptions that marked the nearly 30-minute interview, Harris delivered her stance on immigration and border control to Fox News’ largely conservative audience, one she rarely engages with directly. Before concluding, she took a subtle swipe at Baier.
“I would like that we had a conversation that was grounded in the full assessment of the facts,” Harris said.
“Madam Vice President, they are wrapping me very hard here,” Baier replied before concluding the interview.
A furious Trump hit back at Harris on social media, accusing her of suffering from “a massive and irredeemable case of TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” He went on to praise Baier for conducting a “tough but very fair” interview, claiming it exposed Harris as “totally incompetent.”
“For the good of our nation, her inferior cognitive ability must be tested at once,” Trump said in a post on X.
Harris and Trump have been on a campaign blitz in the final stretch of the US presidential election. With Election Day on November 5, the two opponents have less than three weeks to convince voters they should be the next president.
